SUPER BOWL 44
MIAMI (AP) -- They are literally dancing in the streets of New Orleans, which has been transformed into one big Bourbon Street. Their beloved Saints have gone from NFL laughingstock to Super Bowl champions.
The underdog Saints rallied with 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to shock the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 to win their first Super Bowl.
The Saints, a symbol of hope in rebuilding the city of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, erased an early 10-point deficit to tie the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.
Saints QB Drew Brees smartly controlled the game and was named MVP. Brees completed 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards and two TDs, tying Tom Brady's Super Bowl record for completions. Brees went 7-for-7 on the go-ahead drive that ended with a 2-yard TD pass to tight end Jeremy Shockey with 5:42 left. The Saints gambled for a two-point conversion that worked when Lance Moore made a shoestring catch from Brees that gave the Saints a 24-17 lead. At first the two-point conversion was not ruled a catch, but that was overturned when Saints coach Sean Payton challenged the call.
Holding the Super Bowl trophy, Brees said the Saints victory was "destiny" and added: "We knew we had an entire city and maybe an entire country behind us."
A 74-yard interception touchdown by Tracy Porter with 3:12 left capped the game. Four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning completed 31 of 45 passes for 333 yards with one TD and that one interception, the only turnover of the game.
SUPER BOWL 44-PAYTON
MIAMI (AP) -- In coaching his first Super Bowl, New Orleans coach Sean Payton showed he was unafraid to think outside the box.
Payton rolled the dice from the get-go. He gambled on a fourth-and-one in the first half, and lost. But with the Saints trailing 10-6 and due to kick off to start the second half, Payton gambled and won. He ordered an onside kick, which the Saints recovered. It's the first onside kick in Super Bowl history that happened before the fourth quarter.
Bolstered by their coach's gutsy call, the Saints drove 58 yards in six plays. Drew Brees connected with Pierre Thomas on a 16-yard screen pass for the touchdown that put the Saints ahead 13-10. But the Colts answered with a 10-play, 76-yard drive before the Saints scored 18 unanswered points to shock the pro football world. Included in that closing burst was another Payton gamble, a decision to go for a two-point conversion when the Saints went up by five.
Like mostly everything else Payton did last night, it worked.
SUPER BOWL 44-MANNING
MIAMI (AP) -- Peyton Manning was hoping for his second Super Bowl title in four years. Instead, Manning was responsible for ending any hope of the Colts winning by throwing the only turnover in the Saints' 31-17 upset victory over Indianapolis.
Manning could only watch as Tracy Porter returned an interception for a clinching, 74-yard touchdown in the final minutes of Super Bowl 44. Manning's record in the postseason is 9-and-9.
The four-time NFL MVP called the loss "very disappointing" as he falls to 1-and-1 in the big game. Manning finished 31 of 45 for 333 yards and one TD along with that interception. After the game, Manning said Porter "just made a great play on it."
Manning, who grew up in New Orleans, said it's "time for the Saints to celebrate," adding "It's their championship."
Manning said the Saints "played well in all phases" and they deserved the victory.
SUPER BOWL 44-SAPP
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Former NFL star Warren Sapp is out of jail and apologizing to the NFL family and fans following his arrest the day before the Super Bowl.
Sapp's attorney says the ex-defensive tackle is sorry if his arrest has been a distraction from the big game.
Sapp is accused of choking a woman in his hotel room. He was supposed to be an NFL Network analyst for the Super Bowl, but the network has pulled Sapp off the air as it investigates the matter.
Sapp's attorney is asking everyone to reserve judgment until all the facts come out.

NHL-FINAL SCORES
UNDATED (AP) -- On NHL ice, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals overcame a blizzard and a three-goal deficit to extend their winning streak to 14 games.
Ovechkin scored an arena-rocking hat trick and got the assist on the winning goal in a 5-4 overtime win over Pittsburgh.
Mike Knuble poked in the rebound almost three minutes into overtime after Ovechkin's shot hit the post during a power play.
Washington's winning streak is tied for the third longest in league history and three shy of the record of 17. That was set by the Penguins in 1993.
In the other NHL game, Boston ended its 10-game losing streak by blanking Montreal 3-0 at the Bell Centre. Tuukka Rask made 36 saves for his third shutout, Marco Sturm scored twice for the Bruins' first win since Jan. 14.
NHL-TRADE
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- The San Jose Sharks bolstered their defense by acquiring Niclas Wallin in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Stricker posted his fourth PGA Tour victory in his last 15 starts with a two-shot victory over Luke Donald at the Northern Trust Open at storied Riviera Country Club. The victory vaults Stricker into second place behind Woods in the world golf rankings.
Stricker had a six-shot advantage shrink to two before regaining his composure. He finished 16 under par. Dustin Johnson and J.B. Holmes tied for third behind Donald.
OLY--IOC-LEE REINSTATED
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Several IOC officials familiar with the decision say convicted ex-Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee has been reinstated as a full member of the International Olympic Committee.
The South Korean businessman's rights were restored by the IOC executive board Sunday following a recommendation of the ethics commission.
Lee voluntarily gave up his IOC rights after being indicted in 2008 in a financial and tax evasion case. He was pardoned last year by the South Korean government.
Lee's reinstatement is a boost for South Korea's bid to host the Winter Olympics in 2018.
FLORIDA STATE-CHEATING
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State University says it will vacate a 2007 bowl victory and 11 regular season football wins because of NCAA sanctions over an academic cheating scandal.
The school announced which wins would be vacated in a memo to the NCAA. Along with the football wins, dozens more victories across 10 men's and women's sports will be vacated.
The football wins came under former coach Bobby Bowden. He has amassed the second-most wins in college football history.
