USA Hoops: Pop is a candidate to replace Coach K
USA Basketball spokesman Craig Miller tells Max Sports Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich will be a candidate to replace Mike Krzyzewski as the men's national coach, if indeed Coach K steps down, as he reconfirmed again today on ESPN Radio.
Miller says Team USA is in no hurry to name a successor, for two reasons. For starters, the 2016 Olympics in Rio are still more than three years away, and two, USA President Jerry Colangelo has said he won't officially talk to Coach K about his future until after Duke's season is over.
Miller on Popovich: " Is Pop a candidate? I think it's pretty obvious with the success he's
had in the NBA and additionally, his experiences with USA basketball in
the past. I'm sure Jerry has a list of candidates he wants to talk with
and go over things with."
Miller on Pop's reported rift with USA Basketball: "My personal opinion, working with Jerry, is that he's always going to do what he thinks is best for USA basketball. He's not going to put himself in a position where he's not picking the best candidates."
