COLLEGE BASKETBALL-SCHEDULE
UNDATED (AP) -- The Kansas Jayhawks were able to move into very exclusive company yesterday while advancing to the Big 12 semifinals.
The top-ranked Jayhawks whipped Texas Tech 80-68 to join Kentucky and North Carolina as the only Division I basketball programs with 2,000 wins.
Cole Aldrich had 12 points and 18 rebounds, and Sherron Collins chipped in with 19 points and six assists to lead the Jayhawks to their 30th win in 32 outings.
Also in the Big 12, No. 23 Texas A&M earned a rematch with Kansas by virtue of its 70-64 victory over Nebraska. Donald Sloan scored 23 points to lead the Aggies.
Jamar Samuels scored 21 of his career-high 27 points in the first half as ninth-ranked Kansas State blasted Oklahoma State 83-64.
And No. 21 Baylor hammered Texas 86-67 as LaceDarius Dunn scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half.
There were three upsets and one very close call in the Big East tournament Thursday.
Chris Wright's 27 points led No. 22 Georgetown to a surprising 91-84 win over top seed and third-ranked Syracuse in the tourney quarterfinals. The Orange sustained a potentially costly loss when starting center Arinze Onuaku injured his right leg with 5:07 remaining and didn't return to the game.
The eighth-seeded Hoyas next face Marquette, which pulled off its own upset by downing No. 10 Villanova 80-76. Lazar Hayward had 20 points and seven rebounds, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:51 left.
The third upset had Notre Dame outlasting 16th-ranked Pittsburgh 50-45. Luke Harangody had 12 points and hit three key free throws in the final two minutes.
Seventh-ranked West Virginia barely avoided a loss, beating Cincinnati 54-51 on Da'Sean Butler's three-pointer at the buzzer. Butler finished with 15 points.
Darrington Hobson's 28 points helped eighth-ranked New Mexico hold off Air Force 75-69 in the Mountain West Conference quarterfinals. Dairese Gary added 20 points to the Lobos' 15th straight win.
Also in the Mountain West, Jimmer Fredette set a tournament record with 45 points as 14th-rated Brigham Young knocked off TCU 95-85.
San Diego State and UNLV also reached the semifinals.
No. 15 Tennessee overcame its worst first half of the season to beat LSU 59-49 in the first round of the Southeastern Conference tournament. Wayne Chism had 17 points and 10 for the Vols.
Alabama knocked off South Carolina 68-63 in the first game of the tourney. The night session got under way with Florida ousting Auburn 78-69 before Georgia downed Arkansas 77-64.
Over to Conference USA, where Jeremy Williams scored 17 points as 25th-rated Texas-El Paso beat Central Florida 76-54.
Memphis ended its four-year run as tournament champion by falling to Houston 66-65.
Southern Miss was a 58-44 winner against UAB, before Tulsa outscored Marshall 80-64.
UCLA posted a 75-69 triumph over Arizona to advance in the Pac 10 tourney. Joining the Bruins in the semifinals is Cal, which outscored Oregon 90-74. Stanford also grabbed a spot in the Pac 10's Final Four by beating Arizona State 70-61 before Washington dumped Oregon State 59-52.
The ACC tournament began with Virginia beating Boston College 68-62 before Miami clobbered Wake Forest 83-62. Georgia Tech also moved into the ACC quarterfinals by topping North Carolina 62-58, and N.C. State nipped Clemson 59-57.
In the Big 10 tourney, Michigan surprised Iowa 59-52, Northwestern downed Indiana 73-58 and Minnesota ripped Penn State 76-55.
Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State have reached the Southland Conference title game. Stephen F. Austin advanced with a 60-53 decision over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before Sam Houston nipped Southeastern Louisiana 88-85.
Long Beach State and UC Davis moved into the Big West semifinals.
Utah State, New Mexico State, Nevada and Louisiana Tech won their first-round games in the WAC tournament.
Western Michigan, Ohio, Akron and Miami of Ohio have moved into the Mid-American Conference semifinals.
Hampton and South Carolina State have advanced to the semifinals of the MEAC tourney.
Alabama State and Texas Southern were first-round winners in the SWAC tournament.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL-CONNECTICUT/CALHOUN
STORRS, Conn. (AP) -- Head basketball coach Jim Calhoun will remain on the Connecticut bench next season. Calhoun says he intends to sign a new contract with the school that he's led to two national championships.
ESPN.com reported that Calhoun had reached agreement on a four-year deal, citing a statement released by his agent.
NBA-SCHEDULE
UNDATED (AP) -- The Chicago Bulls continue to fade out of the NBA's Eastern Conference playoff race, dropping their sixth in a row Thursday night and finishing the game without their best player.
Derrick Rose had to sit out the final three quarters of the Bulls' 111-to-82 loss at Orlando after spraining his left wrist in a midair collision with Magic center Dwight Howard. The Magic had little trouble once Rose left the game, racing out to a 32-point halftime lead en route to their seventh consecutive win.
Vince Carter led Orlando with 23 points and Matt Barnes added 14 to help Orlando improve to 46-and-20, four games ahead of second-place Atlanta in the Southeast Division.
The Hawks downed Washington 105-99 behind Jamal Crawford's 29 points. Joe Johnson and Al Horford each added 18 points as Atlanta avoided a third consecutive loss.
Brandon Roy scored 41 points and Portland overcame a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Golden State 110-105. Rudy Fernandez added 12 points including a pair of pivotal 3-pointers during a late 17-3 run by the Blazers.
NHL-SCHEDULE
UNDATED (AP) -- The San Jose Sharks are back atop the NHL's Western Conference standings, thanks to a six-goal third period last night.
Joe Pavelski fueled the Sharks' 8-5 comeback win over Nashville by collecting four points in the final period, netting a pair of tiebreaking goals and collecting two assists. Dany Heatley also scored twice and had an assist for the Sharks, who trailed 4-2 in the final period before moving two points ahead of Chicago for the West lead.
The outcome also puts the Predators in a tie with Calgary for seventh in the West, one point ahead of the Red Wings.
The Flames and Wings were winners last night.
Miikka Kiprusoff has four shutouts this season following a 33-save effort in Calgary's 2-0 win over Ottawa. Jamal Mayers and Christopher Higgins provided the scoring in the Flames' fourth-straight win.
Detroit kept pace with Calgary as Johan Franzen scored twice in the Wings' 5-1 win against Minnesota. Henrik Zetterberg added a goal and two assists for Detroit.
Also in the NHL, Brian Pothier scored 23 seconds into overtime to complete Carolina's 4-3 verdict over Pittsburgh. Eric Staal and Ray Whitney each had a goal and an assist as the Hurricanes won for the 13th time in 17 games while ending the Penguins' four-game winning streak.
Paul Stastny scored twice to support Craig Anderson in Colorado's 3-0 blanking of Florida. Anderson stopped 27 in his seventh shutout of the season, tying three other netminders for the league lead.
Montreal has a four-game winning streak after Andrei Kostitsyn scored in the fifth shootout round to lift the Canadiens past Edmonton 5-4. Jaroslav Halak blanked the Oilers in the shootout after making 21 saves in regulation and overtime.
Mark Recchi supplied the game-winner and Tuukka Rask handled 31 shots in Boston's 5-1 win at Philadelphia. Patrice Bergeron notched a goal and two assists for the Bruins.
Washington clinched the Southeast Division title when Columbus nipped Atlanta 2-1. Kristian Huselius had a goal and an assist for the winners.
Chris Mason stopped 29 shots before T.J. Oshie and Brad Boyes scored shootout goals to lift St. Louis to its sixth win in seven games, 2-1 over the New York Islanders.
Toronto downed Tampa Bay 4-3 on Phil Kessel's goal at 3:33 of overtime.
GOLF-WOODS

DORAL, Fla. (AP) -- If Tiger Woods competes at Augusta next month, he'll do it without playing any warmup tournaments.
Two people with knowledge of his plans tell The Associated Press Woods intends to remain out of golf at least until the Masters.
Woods has spent the last two weeks practicing at Isleworth near his Orlando home. Swing coach Hank Haney flew there during the weekend to work with him, leading to speculation that he was close to playing again.
PGA-WGC-CA CHAMPIONSHIP
DORAL, Fla. (AP) -- Charl Schwartzel played bogey-free golf en route to a 5-under-par 67 and a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the CA Championship in Florida.
Ernie Els hit into the water with his approach on No. 18 and made bogey for a 4-under 68, putting him in a three-way tie for second with Vijay Singh and Robert Allenby.
NFL-OBIT/OLSEN
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Pro Football Hall of Famer Merlin Olsen has died at age 69, one year after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
Olsen was a consensus All-American at Utah State and won the 1961 Outland Trophy as the nation's best interior lineman. The Rams drafted him third overall in 1962 and he spent the next 15 years with the team before retiring in 1976 with 14 Pro Bowls on his resume.
Olsen joined Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier on the Rams' storied "Fearsome Foursome" defensive line. They helped the club set an NFL record for the fewest yards allowed during a 14-game season in 1968.
Olsen went on to work as a football analyst and actor on TV. He had a role on "Little House on the Prairie," before starring in his own series, "Father Murphy," from 1981 to 1983 and the short-lived "Aaron's Way" in 1988.
NFL-WILLIAMS
DENVER (AP) -- Suspected gang member Willie Clark has been found guilty of murder in the drive-by shooting death of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams three years ago.
A jury returned the verdict after an 11-day trial and a day and a half of deliberation. Clark faces a sentence of life in prison. There was no immediate word on a possible appeal.

UNDATED (AP) -- Tank Johnson has signed a four-year contract to stay with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The big defensive tackle started 13 games last season despite a problem with his right foot that limited his mobility and caused a lot of pain. Johnson came to Cincinnati on a one-year deal from Dallas.

--Unrestricted free-agent running back Kevin Faulk has re-signed with the Patriots. The 33-year-old Faulk ran for 335 yards and caught 37 passes for 301 yards and scored three touchdowns last season.
--Carolina starting quarterback Matt Moore has signed his one-year, $3.043 million tender with the Panthers rather than test the free-agent market. The 25-year-old Moore went 4-1 as a starter with eight touchdowns and two interceptions and a passer rating of 98.5.
