NFL-AP AWARDS

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has won the 2011 Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award in a landslide.

Rodgers earned 48 votes to two for New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. The Packers star is the first Green Bay player honored since Brett Favre (fahrv) concluded a run of three straight seasons as MVP in 1997.

Rodgers led the NFL in passing with 45 touchdown passes, six interceptions and a 68.3 completion percentage as the Packers went 15-1 and won the NFC North.

He joins former Packers Bart Starr, Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung in being selected MVP.

Rodgers is the third consecutive quarterback voted MVP, joining New England's Tom Brady (2007, 2010) and Indianapolis' Peyton Manning (2008,2009).

In other AP awards:

NFL-SUPER BOWL

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The 46th Super Bowl is just one day away. The Super Sunday matchup has the AFC Champion Patriots facing the NFC champion Giants. The game features two of the top quarterbacks in the game, Eli Manning for New York and Tom Brady for New England.

The game marks the seventh appearance for the Patriots in the Super Bowl and fifth for the Giants.

The Giants had a walkthrough practice scheduled today. The Pats had their walkthrough yesterday and plan a team picture at the game site.

Rob Gronkowski walked without a limp as the Patriots gathered for photographs. The Pats star tight end is recovering from a high ankle sprain suffered two weeks ago.

NFL-SUPER BOWL ROSTERS

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- So close to the Super Bowl, yet so far.

Wide receiver Tiquan Underwood has been cut by the Patriots less than 24 hours before the big game -- bad news for him, of course, but a move that increases the likelihood Chad Ochocinco (oh-choh-SEEN'-koh) will be active against the Giants on Sunday.

Ochocinco had a career-low 15 catches in his first season with the Patriots and was inactive for the AFC championship game against the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago. He's never played in the Super Bowl.

New England's other wide receivers are Wes Welker, Deion Branch, Julian Edelman and Matthew Slater.

In another move Saturday, the Patriots signed defensive end Alex Silvestro from their practice squad.

NFL-PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Curtis Martin has gone from the mean streets of Pittsburgh to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The star running back with the Patriots and Jets for 11 seasons was one of six players elected Saturday to the shrine. Martin once disliked playing the game, but used it to escape a neighborhood where his grandmother was murdered.

Martin, the NFL's fourth-leading career rusher, said he turned to football "so I didn't end up jailed or dead." He added: "If you make up your mind to just do the right thing no matter what ... and you stick to it, which I did, this is how things can turn around. I feel as if my life turned around from what it used to be, and I think anyone has a chance."

Martin and four linemen were elected to the hall, along with one senior committee choice. He is joined by Chris Doleman, who played for Minnesota: Cortez Kennedy, who played for Seattle; Willie Roaf, a Saints tackle; Dermontti Dawson, a center with Pittsburgh and senior selection Jack Butler, a defensive back with Pittsburgh.

NFL-LONDON GAME

LONDON (AP) -- Ticket sales for the NFL's annual game in London have been suspended while the St. Louis Rams try to solve an issue regarding the lease on their home stadium. The Rams are scheduled to host the Patriots at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 28 and have agreed to give up a home game in each of the next three seasons to play in London. However, that apparently clashes with the team's lease on the Edward James Dome in St. Louis.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') said Friday that the game will be played and that he hopes "it will be with the Rams and the New England Patriots."

T25 MEN'S BASKETBALL-LATEST SCORES

UNDATED (AP) -- Anthony Davis had 22 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks as No. 1 Kentucky wiped away the memories of the last time the top-ranked Wildcats came to South Carolina with an 86-52 victory.

Kentucky is 23-1 overall. It has won 15 straight and moved to 9-0 in the Southeastern Conference for the first time in seven years. And they'll stay atop the rankings, unlike in 2010 when the No. 1 Wildcats were stunned 68-62 by the Gamecocks.

This time, Davis and Terrence Jones made sure there wouldn't be a similar flop. The two combined for 34 points in the first half as Kentucky took a 52-25 lead at the break and eventually increased the margin to 41 points.

In other AP Top-25 action:

--Second-ranked Syracuse had an easy time of things with St. John's, winning 95-70. The win gave the Orange a record of 23-1 on the season and 10-1 in the Big East. For Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim (BAY'-hym) the victory tied him with Dean Smith for third place on the all-time list with 879 wins. Fab Melo scored a career-high 14 points in his return after a three-game absence for the Orange. The 7-footer had missed the last three games as he resolved an academic issue.

--Ohio State got 24 points and 10 rebounds from Jared Sullinger and William Buford hit a critical 3-pointer down the stretch as the third-ranked Buckeyes beat No. 19 Wisconsin 58-52. With the victory, Ohio State ended a nine-game losing streak to Wisconsin in Madison.

-- Tyler Zeller scored 22 points, John Henson had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and No. 5 North Carolina rallied from a nine-point deficit in the second half to beat Maryland 83-74. The 20-3 Tar Heels got all they could handle from the upstart Terps, who are 13-9.

-- Sixth-ranked Baylor had a tough time on the road, winning at Oklahoma State, 64-60. Perry Jones III had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Bears and Quincy Acy provided the go-ahead basket and a key offensive rebound down the stretch.

-- Leonard Washington and Francisco Cruz scored 16 points apiece and Wyoming throttled No. 11 UNLV's high-scoring offense in a 68-66. Luke Martinez added 15 points--all on 3-pointers.

-- Kenny Boynton scored 18 points, Bradley Beal added 16 and No. 12 Florida beat No. 25 Vanderbilt 73-65. The Gators, who are 19-4, have won seven straight. The Commodores are 16-7.

-- Anthony James buried a 3 at the buzzer as Northern Iowa upset No. 13 Creighton (KRAY'-tuhn) 65-62, snapping the Bluejays' 11-game winning streak. James scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half.

-- Georgetown, the 14th-ranked team in the AP poll, got 13 points and nine rebounds from Henry Sims in a 75-45 win over South Florida. Otto Porter added 12 points, and Jason Clark had 11 for the Hoyas, while Augustus Gilchrist scored 15 points to lead the Bulls.

-- Marquette, the 15th-ranked team in the AP poll, was beaten by Notre Dame, 76-59. Irish freshman Pat Connaughton had 23 points and 11 rebounds in the home win. The loss snapped a seven-game conference winning streak for Marquette.

-- In a mild upset 21st-ranked Florida State beat No. 16 Virginia 58-55. Reserve Okaro White scored 13 points for the Seminoles and Xavier Gibson added 10 points as FSU kept a share of first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with its seventh straight league victory. This marks the first time that Florida State has won seven straight games in ACC play since joining the league in 1991-92.

--Arnett Moultrie scored 21 points, Renardo Sidney added 17 and No. 22 Mississippi State beat Auburn 91-88.

In a notable non-ranked game, Connecticut played without veteran Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun. He announced yesterday that he is taking an indefinite medical leave because of severe back pain. The Huskies, with assistant coach George Blaney in charge, beat Seton Hall, 69-46 for their 15th win of the season.

NBA-HAWKS

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Hawks say reserve center Jason Collins will miss the next two weeks with a sprained left elbow. Collins was injured in Thursday's home loss to Memphis. An 11-year NBA veteran, Collins has started 31 of 81 career games in three seasons with Atlanta. He is averaging 3.8 points and four rebounds this season in 22 minutes per game.

NHL-LATEST SCORES

UNDATED (AP) -- The red-hot Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins 2-1. Marc-Andre Fleury (marhk-ahn-dray FLOOR'-ee) led the way with 28 saves, and Evgeni Malkin had a power-play goal to lift the Pens to the win in Boston. Matt Cooke had the other goal for the Penguins, who rebounded from a 1-0 loss at Toronto on Wednesday that ended a season-high eight-game winning streak. Pittsburgh has won nine of 10.

For the Bruins, Joe Corvo scored Boston's goal, and Tim Thomas stopped 26 shots.

In other NHL action:

-- In Philadelphia the Flyers were stopped by New Jersey 6-5. The Devils took a 4-0 lead in the game but the Flyers came roaring back to make a game of it. Kurtis Foster scored a pair of power-play goals for the Devils, who have won three straight. The road team has won each of the four games between the teams.

--Tomas Vokoun made 30 saves for his third shutout of the season and Alexander Semin (SEHM'-ihn) scored on the second of Washington's two penalty shots in the Capitals' 3-0 win over Montreal.

--Kevin Bieksa tied the game with 34.1 seconds remaining in regulation and Mason Raymond scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Vancouver Canucks rallied for a 3-2 win over the struggling Colorado Avalanche.

DOWNHILL SKIING-VONN

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) -- Lindsey Vonn ranks among the all-time greats in women's alpine skiing. She captured her 50th World Cup victory today by winning a downhill race in Germany. She now trails only Annemarie Moser-Proell (PREHL) of Austria and her 62 victories and Vreni Schneider of Switzerland and her 55.

With the temperature at minus-13 degrees at the starting hut, Vonn trailed early but recovered at the bottom to win by nearly half a second on a slope that gave her trouble at last year's world championships.

Vonn's winning time was 1 minute, 44.86 seconds. She leads the overall World Cup standings by 482 points and the downhill standings by 230 points.

Cold, Wet Weekend

A flash flood watch is in effect until noon tomorrow.  We are tracking a cold front as it makes its way southward to San Antonio.  I expect the front to reach the area between 4 and 6am tomorrow morning.  The front will bring a round of showers and thunderstorms to the region with the primary threat being heavy rainfall.  Look for the most of the rain to fall east of the I-35 corridor.  We could see isolated totals of up to 3 inches ...
