Comment: they have a monument for other soldiers why not mexican americans also??????????? by monica

Comment: Do I think this is racist NO, in war there is no such thing as race. There is only one color and its red Blood Red for the fallen heroes of our country. Should there be a monument in honor of Hispanics veterans I say yes and there should be one for all races for they are equal in this. we should honor veterans of today and of yesterday. by harold

Comment: Not at all I am Mexican American Iraq War Veteraran and I wouldnt find it racist only if he had a sombero or something that I would other then that its ok with me. by Jesus

Comment: we all served. by tommy

Comment: The HV Monument is La Ofrenda which means offering to all veterans. People need to be educated on what this means. by lourdes

Comment: I think its racist when people do not want to have a hispanic veterans monument. by Josie

Comment: It is prejudice and not right to the other nationalities that have served. by V

Comment: Its no more racist than to honor an American Father of this country that was a SLAVE OWNER and a practicing Dietest. Its time Hispanics have their appreciation. Being of Mexican descent and born in Mexico but LEGALLY immigrating here at the age of 2. Im proud to have this happen in my lifetime. by Ernest

Comment: This monument is an Offering from Hispanic Veterans to All Veterans from all branches of service. by E

Comment: If anyone took the time to actually understand what this monument is for, they would quickly realize that it is intended to be a tribute to ALL veterans, from the perspective of the Hispanic Community. As a veteran myself, who is also of Hispanic descent, I would be proud to have a place in the city I grew up, where I could go to honor, reflect and pay respect to ALL of my brothers and sisters in arms. That is what the Hispanic Veterans Monument - La Ofrenda, is supposed to be. by Federico

Comment: This web poll question is misleading. This is NOT a monument in honor of ONLY Hispanic veterans. It is in honor of ALL veterans. I invite everyone to visit the website for the monument: www.laofrenda.org. You will see that the mission of the La Ofrenda Committee is as follows: "To create a place of peaceful remembrance and recognition in honor of all of our nation's veterans; and to reveal the untold stories and contributions of our lesser known heroes - the many brave men and women who have so honorably served our country." In other words, the mission is two-fold. To honor ALL veterans AND to serve as an educational piece for the community. If anyone knew the history of this monument, they would understand this. by Queta

Comment: A Hispanic can be of any race, so how is it exclusionary? by Milo

Comment: It is important to always honor those who serve in our military. Unfortunately, there is a growing trend, especially in the Southern U.S., to diminish and erase the contributions and sacrifices of Latino, or "Hispanic" Americans and Veterans. It is a small concession to allow this monument; it was paid for with the same blood and tears, and is no more racist than other veteran monuments in other parts of the country. The cries and wails of Latino mothers who cried out in Spanish as they squeezed The Flag they were given to replace their sons is no less. We need to be careful of those who are attempting to rewrite history. If it can start with Hispanics, I assure you it won't stop there. by David

Comment: As Ms Galvan stated, this monument is an "offering" to all veterans. The hispanic community is proud to have such a monument in their community. I am a Desert Storm veteran and proud to be a part of this honor. Remember the war program aired on TV? There were no hispanics honored in this airing. by Raquel

Comment: Not at all racist by Anthony

Comment: How in the world could it be called racist? A Veteran is a veteran, no matter there ethic origin. This is what is wrong with this country now. The political bullsh-t that is going on now is turning each and every american aginst each other because of the governments bullsh=t policies. by d

Comment: Heck no! Most of the time i never even thought of which race someone belonged to when i served with them. Any veteran recognition is great by me! by Tony

Comment: Why not honor all vets? We live in a heavily populated city of service members, and they aren't all Hispanic. How do you think that makes other service members -and their families- feel? That's a slap in the face. by Catherine

Comment: A Veteran is a Veteran no matter the color of the skin. by Daniel

Comment: Should be a monument for all races in honor of all veterans, for they fought side by side with each other. by Lauren

Comment: Veteran is a vet... why add Hispanic? Unless a private citizen is paying for it we should keep race out of it, the city should represent everyone (meaning when selecting who they are going to honor they are only going to look a select group, which is not right) :) Now if they have an idea of who they want, put them up, but just doesn’t have to add: this is a White/Black/Hispanic Vet. We can figure out their nationality, if that what we look for, if we know the soldiers last name. But if tax payers’ money is not being spent, who cares, private people should be allowed to do what they want with their money! by Jennifer

Comment: All Vets are to be honored not just one nationality of Vets. by Married To A Vet

Comment: As a causation veteran and tax payer if this monument is paid for by our city taxes then it is not from the Hispanic community but from all of San Antonio and Bexar county by Jeff

Comment: ABSOLUTELY RACIST!! I am a caucasian vet and feel biased against. by Dan

Comment: Where is one for other races? If there was one for white people Jessie Jackson and the NAACP would be down here.

Comment: People would be angry if it was a white veteran's memorial.

Comment: In the military, there is no color. We fought with all races. Can you imagine if someone recommended a monument for White veterans? We should be working toward losing segregation, not making it worse. by Steve

Comment: If it is being paid for with public funds, then it should be dedicated to all veterans. If it is 100% paid for using private funds then they are free to do what they please with it. by P

Comment: Every Veteran should be honored, not just hispanics. Don't ask for monies from non-hispanics for this project. Look at the proposed sample, not all hispanics are Catholic, why the virgin mary. by Victor

Comment: When I served in Vietnam, ALL of my fellow servicemen and women were my brothers and sisters in arms - NOT just the ones from the same ethnic background. This is a slap in the face to the brotherhood that military service creates in ALL veterans. Ever since the military was integrated by President Truman, the military has worked to develop a fighting force that is equal in all respects. All-in-all, a really bad idea that flies in the face of America, the melting pot! by Herman

Comment: There is not race associated with veterans

Comment: The Hispanics are the first to complain of prejudice they should live by what they preach. by john

Comment: How would you like a monument to only white vets? You wouldn't! In the military, we are one race...human race! by Dan

Comment: As a Viet Nam combat vet, I'm offended by a monument to "Hispanic" veterans and consider it to be blantly racist. Further, the double talk to justify this ugly sight is sickening. by Ed

Comment: Would it be ok to have a monument to white veterans? The answer is the same...they would both be racist moves. by Eric

Comment: It's kind of silly, but picture the reaction if someone proposed a "white veterans memorial". (Gringo veterans memorial?) by Bob

Comment: Gee, let's have one just for blacks, or whites, or... Bad idea!!!! by Debbie

Comment: This is just the kind of thing that creates racism. Dumb idea! by Jim

Comment: It should be named "The Veterans Monument". If the proposal would have been made to erect a monument honoring white or black veterans, the hispanics and Lulac would have been outraged and jumped all over it. It's a 13 story monstrosity that callously demonstrates a lack of appreciation, recognition and gratitude to ALL veterans who served this country. It's shamefull. demonstrates a lack of appreciation and gratitude to ALL veterans who served this country.would cause an outrage and would have gotten shot down bu Lulac. by Jim

Comment: military, police fire is a brotherhood that does not recognize color..san antonio is a military city let's respect all races.. by keith

Comment: If the monument was to white Veterans would it be racist? by Chip

Comment: All Veterans served together and created a brotherhood of veterans to separate this by race is moving us back into a day where races should be sepapate which the miltary has done so well moving away from. by julie

Comment: It certainly is racist! You know the uproar that would occur if there was a memorial to white veterans. No difference. In addition, there should be no specific race pointed out when it comes to our military. by Nicole

Comment: So, let's have a monument in honor of White veterans. Doesn't that sound racist? It is! by Sonny

Comment: I think the monument should be for all veteran's, not just hispanic. Look at the wall in D.C. Every name of soldiers who did not come home are on there. Veteran's are not black, white, or brown. by Christy

Comment: It would be if it was in honor of White Vets. Be all kinds of heck raised over it. So this is racist also. After all we have several orginazations that are for a certin race but I know of none for us whites. Just pray it isn't named after Cesar Chaves later on!! by lee

Comment: I'm so sick of people caught up on skin color & external appearance & their own nationality. When we die & meet our maker, it is not going to make a difference. by Jose

Comment: Any veterans monument needs to include ALL veterans. by Don

Comment: VERY Racist. This behavior is not tolerated in the military! by Jimmy

Comment: We have AMERICANS serving in the military for the USA. Doesn't matter what ethnic class or race. All should be honored. by mona

Comment: A veteran is a veteran stop trying to make it about race. We have had this Hispanic thing pushed to the limit. I am a retired Marine of 24 years. by Gary
