Do you think freshmen at Jefferson High School should be required to take a course in fine arts, athletics or JROTC?
| 47.05% | Yes | |
| 52.94% | No |
Comment: Not unless this is a specialized school where ROTC training is the main objective. by Yolie
Comment: I don't think the students should be required to participate in a program like JROTC especially if they don't want to. by Julian
Comment: As a wife of a deployed soldier and personally prior military, I strongly oppose this requirement. ROTC should be available to all students, but should not be forced upon everyone. If anything, mandatory study groups or review sessions should be promoted. by Sarah
Comment: are we in Nazi Germany? I guess so. by Abel
Comment: The answer is "NO" when the poll is worded as-is, almost as if the poll was intended to be misleading. If you add in the words "as an alternative to participation in other team/discipline/character-building activities" as the poll likely implies based on the context of the news story, then the answer is a definite "YES". A young person could do much worse than taking ONE measly little semester of JROTC. The people of San Antonio seem to overreact to change, usually due to incomplete information. Any mandatory JROTC would be for ONE SEMESTER. The child would not even have to wear a uniform. Nobody is going to "recruit", "brainwash", or "send your kids off to war", as has been implied by parents in television news interviews. The mission of the JROTC is "To motivate young people to be better citizens." I believe our young people need to get their motivation to be better citizens from somewhere, and the JROTC is a great place to get it. by Mike
Comment: If a child wants to do it then they will if not they should not force them to do things that they don't want to do.
Comment: It should be against the law. I am getting my son out of Jefferson. by ra
Comment: Many of the children come into school with lack of self awareness, and without concern for others. JROTC does bring this and other great factors to the children. by Michael
Comment: its a free world but i'm under the influence that in troubled parts of the city structure is much needed. i'm an ex offender and been in trouble with the law between the age of 15 to 32...i'm now 36 and finally learned messing with the law is no fun...i lacked structure in my home...with one parent my mother who worked 2 jobs it was easy to get in trouble...so structure is good...but nothing can be forced upon you in our country...so freedom of choice is what makes our country what it is...so therefore it is unconstitutional to make anybody to do something they do not want to... by vince
Comment: The heart of a volunteer is stronger than someone who is forced to participate in something they don't want to. The military is an all volunteer force and we shouldn't be requiring students to participate in ROTC. I think ROTC is a great program to be a part of, but not by making it a requirement. by Carl
Comment: God forbid that we give students discipline and structure. by Rey
Comment: Absolutely. What better education and appreciation of our military responsibility than to experience it on a "mini-scale" via a ROTC program. Everyone who lives in this country has an obligation to serve this country, regardless of how small the military commitment may be. Numerous peaceful countries follow this doctrine. The students will actually have better military understanding and training than the present incumbent President of the US. by Bernd
Comment: It's bad enough they have to take freshmen prep, now JROTC. by Bee
Comment: i was in chior and it taught me teamwork. you cant make a beautiful sound alone. a group of singers sounds so beautiful compared to that of a single singer. i graduated jeff in 02. i was in athletics i was made fun of due to my weight and had trouble running, and i never attempted jrotc as i didnt have the discipline. it was different for my ex husband who also graduated in 02. he found jrotc easier. so they should be required to take one of them. if not all. by mary
Comment: I guess people forget where Jefferson was heading. If I knew I could, my son would be attending there now that Ms.Cockrell is there. She did wonders at Fox Tech and sure to do the same here. Come on people why do you think they brought her back from her retirement. SHE's GOOD! You have got to keep these kids busy or they are going to slip. Jefferson was not the safest place anymore , especially for females. by S
