Should the Texas Board of Education approve its current plan for Texas history books?

26.92% Yes
73.07% No

Comment: I would think that people who wish to re-write history have an agenda, and its one that suits their wants.scary.a little corporal from austria tried that some years ago, unfortunaly for the world he was'nt stopped before he commited some of the most horrible crimes against humanity in history, get it history.teaching what you want people to hear, espcially children is,as I said scary.history happened and should be written as it was,not how a select group feels it should be. by DON

Comment: Although I do not agree with the complete exclusion of founding fathers for whatever reason, this kind of plan is to be expected. For too long, the basics have taken second place to social programming by the left and it has to stop. As with any pendulum motion, if pulled to far one way, the result is an extreme movement in the other direction. The biggest problem is that the next movement may violate physics completely and move even farther to the left instead of less. Ultimately, we need a balanced education system but it will never happen under the current system where bureaucracies have complete control. We need to end public education as it exists today. We need to remove all influence of union and federal and privatize the system. Give people back their taxes and they will shop for the best schools. The competition will force schools to return to the basics and make sure they teach well. by Marc

Comment: GOOD GOD NO!!! Thomas Jefferson wrote "Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty". They want to write him out of the textbooks to give more time to a neo-Conservative political agenda?? Why not replace Tom with Soviet leader Joe Stalin, who said "Because the people are always right and The Party is the will of the people "? by Gus

Comment: Your spot on this issue in this morning's news did not go into the other changes in this plan. Not only are they wanting to minimize Thomas Jefferson's role because of his stance on separation of church and state, but they want to change how slavery is represented explaining it as the "Atlantic Triangular Trade". That itself is horrifying! Also, they are making negative associations with the implementation of Affirmative Action (which should be noted since we are in Texas, affected Hispanics as well). They are pushing to say that we were a christian country, and that was the primary driving force of most of US History. That is only true to a point, and is trying to negate the fact that we were founded on the backs and blood of immigrants from across the globe, not to mention the native people who were here already. I would also prefer to teach my children religious and spiritual beliefs in my home. If they would like to teach their children this misinformation, then they can do that in their own homes. Wanting to put a bias on history is wrong either way. History should be represented as it happened and fairly from all perspectives. If we control what our children learn with such hateful bias, we are worse than those other brainwashing governments that conservatives dislike so much. The point of educating children is to rid them of ignorance so that they can be successful in the rest of their lives. Being taught to have such an ignorant view and understanding of World and US history gives them a tremendous disservice for interacting with the rest of the world and country learning factual history. Imagine them going off to college and telling professors that slavery was merely a trade endeavor. It is the responsibility of the Board to consider the good of all their population, not just the bias wants of the majority. They need to step back and evaluate whether it is their own agenda or for the common good. Just because you are in a power position does not mean that you can change history. This is just wrong. Those that support it should consider the implications it will have on your child's future in the world beyond Texas. by T'ai Li

Comment: They need to keep their hands off the truth. Despite what they would like to believe- TRUTH is not subjective! by PJ

Comment: When we politicize our schools and what we teach we all lose. The children lose out on education and adults lose the trust of our children.

Comment: i think texas has the worst education off all the states.no matter how they change the books the kids are still being prepared for the TAKS test. by ray

Comment: Absolutely. Texas is a conservative state we set the standard. Our children need to know the truth about American History. Not the liberal view. PERIOD!!! by CHET

Comment: Yes. Conservative view point is the truth. by Lety

Comment: Liberals have been in charge and Texas kids have been falling behind. Our lack of graduating minorities and drop out rate are sickening. What they have been doing obviously hasn't worked. by Mike

Comment: Seperation of church and state is NOT in the Constitution(WHICH MOST PEOPLE HAVE NOT READ FOR THEMSELVES) as is being taught now. It would be nice for kids to be taught the truth. by Joseph

Comment: What is the current plan? There is no brief overview or link provided, so I'm forced to disapprove. by Calen
