Study: Poverty in Austin suburbs rises sharply

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A new publication reveals the Austin metro area over the course of a decade saw the nation's second-fastest increase in the number of poor people living in the suburbs.
The findings by the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. is part of a book being released Monday that argues poverty is shifting from inner cities to America's suburbs.
The Austin American-Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/11RHhuP ) that from 2000 to 2011, the suburban poor population grew 143 percent in the Austin metro area. Only Atlanta saw faster growth in the number of poor living in the suburbs. The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area placed 12th overall and Houston 15th.
As a whole, the nation's suburban poor population surged 64 percent since 2000, twice the rate of the urban poor population.
