Judge to hear new evidence in school finance case
June 19, 2013 16:20 GMT

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The judge in Texas' sweeping school finance case says he will hear new evidence based on the Legislature's recent restoring of about $3.4 billion in funding to classrooms.
State District Judge John Dietz presided over months of testimony, then ruled in February that how Texas funds schools is inadequate and inequitable.
But his decision was based on lawmakers' 2011 cuts of $5.4 billion from public education. The Legislature has now approved a new state budget restoring $3.4 billion of that.
Dietz said the case will return to trial in January to hear six weeks of testimony on what the new funding means.
More than 600 school districts sued following the 2011 cuts, arguing they were unconstitutional. The districts still say more money won't fix flaws in the overall school-funding formula.
