Ex-Lewisville coach acquitted of human trafficking
June 20, 2013 12:59 GMT
DENTON, Texas (AP) -- An ex-basketball coach at a Dallas-area school has been acquitted of human trafficking charges related to a 16-year-old player from Mexico.
The Dallas Morning News (http://dallasne.ws/194PRZM ) reports a jury in Denton on Wednesday acquitted Theodore Berry II.
Berry was a Lewisville High School assistant coach when he was accused of forcing the youth to sell gourmet popcorn in 2011. Berry resigned after being arrested.
Police previously said Berry threatened the student because the youth balked at selling popcorn to help fund a club team operated by the coach. Police say the student's parents paid Berry $300 a month for their son to live with him, attend Lewisville High School and play basketball for the school.
The student is now 18 years old and attends classes in the Keller district.
