By: Jennifer Saucedo

Bernie Morin, 54, who is the former maintenance and operations director at Northside I.S.D., was sentenced for bribery.

A judge gave Morin five years deferred adjudication, a form of probation.

Over the summer, Morin was indicted for bribery.

Investigators say Morin took $25,000.00 in bribes from a company that sold equipment to the district.

"I am very sorry that I've pain so many people," Morin told the judge during his sentencing hearing. "I'm very remorseful of what has taken place."

Under a plea deal, Morin faced five years in prison.

He pleaded "no contest" to the bribery charge.

"Mr. Morin has tremendous remorse for what has occurred here," said Morin's attorney Loraine Efron. "He's suffered enormous consequence personally, financially."

If Morin violates any terms of his probation, he may face the full range of punishment which is two to twenty years in prison.Ex-NISD Official Who Took Bribes Sentenced

Help could be available for uninsured West losses
May 21, 2013 10:52 GMT

WEST, Texas (AP) -- Disaster help may be available for losses not covered by insurance in a Central Texas town recovering from a fertilizer plant explosion.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency on Monday urged survivors of the April 17 blast in West to check with FEMA after getting an insurance settlement.

The explosion claimed 15 lives and left about 200 people hurt. Dozens of buildings were damaged or destroyed in West, about 70 miles south of Fort Worth.

FEMA cannot duplicate insurance coverage but agency officials say additional help may be available. Grants could help pay for temporary housing, home repairs, disaster-related medical and dental expenses and personal property and transportation costs.

An applicant must provide a copy of the insurance settlement letter or denial to seek additional government help.
