Train Crash Victim Released from Hospital
By: Christina Coleman

Jeff Frantz was stunned when he learned that his friend was one of the war veterans on the float that was slammed into by a Union Pacific Train on Thursday in Midland.  He says Marine Staff Sergeant Mark Juarez, 28, was already recovering from being hit by a sniper's bullet in Afghanistan two years ago. Frantz says Juarez kept his composure after the crash, "It wasn't like he was upset or angry. He was just thankful that he was alive. He was in the position that he and his wife was ok."  Juarez was one of dozens of people in Midland for a week long celebration honoring veterans. Juarez says his faith in God has helped him get through these difficult times.  The driver of the float is an army veteran himself.  Investigators say it looks like  he drove the float across the tracks even though warning bells and flashing lights were activated.

HOUSTON (AP) -- New estimates show Texas has eight of the nation's 15 fastest-growing cities.

Estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau show San Marcos in Central Texas led the way with a nearly 5 percent population boom between July 2011 and July 2012. That's the highest rate among U.S. cities with at least 50,000 people.

Of the 10 big U.S. cities with the largest gains, half are in Texas: Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth. Only New York added more people than Houston, which now has a population of nearly 2.2 million after adding more than 34,500 people.

Midland; Conroe, just north of Houston; and the Austin suburbs of Cedar Park and Georgetown also are among the fastest-growing in the country.
