Waste Watch: Fire Truck Crash Costly For Taxpayers
Nearly a million dollars in taxpayer money. As our Christina Coleman found out, that's how much will likely be spent on what's being called a reckless crash. San Antonio City Council approved nearly one-million dollars for the replacement of a fire truck that was totaled in an accident in November of 2010. An investigation showed that the ladder truck was traveling at an unsafe speed when it tried to take a turn and flipped. The truck needed to be replaced to the tune of $995,000. The money comes from the city's "equipment renewal and replacement fund." The city pushed a multi-million dollar bond program, that voters just approved, claiming every dime is needed. Troy Elliott with the City of San Antonio Finance Department said,  "We set money aside out of our general fund so that when it comes time to replace a fire truck the money is available to go out and buy a new truck to replace the old truck." Even though the money is available, the fire department isn't taking this crash lightly. Noel Horan with the San Antonio Fire Department said, "We had all of our firefighters actually go to the services location and view the vehicle so they could see the rollover and the impact that it had." All of the firefighters involved in the crash were disciplined. The department admits that the crash will cost some serious money, but leaders say that's why they've made some serious policy changes. Horan said, "As a department obviously we're frustrated we're having to replace the vehicle, but again what we did is use this as a learning experience. We're ensuring that all of our vehicle operators are functioning in the most effective and safe manner."
