Waste Watch: Commissioners Approve Pay Raises for Elected Officials
More money for people you put in office. Today, Bexar County Commissioners approved raises for elected leaders. But in tonight's Waste Watch report, the County Judge explains why he may not take the money. In Bexar County, times are still tough. "Looking at the condition of the Bexar County finances at the moment, the fact is that next year they are saying that the taxes will probably be less than this year," said Louis Rowe, a member of the citizen advisory committee. So, when a citizens committee met to discuss raises for the county's elected officials, there were some tough decisions. Rowe says because of the economy, they couldn't justify a raise. But because elected officials hadn't seen a salary increase since 2008, the committee decided on a 2% cost of living increase per year. "They have been stagnate for I think it's three years now and for them to at least keep up with the economy we felt we had to recommend at least that much," said Rowe. "I think the 2% is fair, but that depends on what we are able to do for other employees," said Judge Nelson Wolff. Commissioners approved the 2% increase, which for all county elected officials combined adds up to $85,843 dollars per year. It's money that's already been budgeted, but Wolff says that doesn't mean he and the other commissioners will take it." People are used to getting more than 2%, nobody's really been getting that. At least not around here for at least the last 4 years around here now," said Wolff. He's waiting to see what county  employees will get before he makes a decision. "It's just going to be dependent on what we can afford for everybody at least two, if we can maybe we'll take it, if we're not able to do it. We're not going to take it. I'm not going to take it." Even though the commissioners approved the raises, they can still individually chose whether to accept them. They have until September to make their decisions.
