SAN ANTONIO -- You don't have to search very hard to find missing meter box covers. Some of the meter boxes belong to the San Antonio Water System.

SAWS says people are stealing the covers and selling them for scrap. The water utility told us the thefts have been a problem in the past and it's continuing, especially here lately.

"We're certainly seeing a demand on these. We've seen situations where we've replaced these meter box covers,  gone around the block and by the time we get back again the covers are gone again," said Anne Hayden, a spokesperson for SAWS.

Hoping to keep the covers where they belong, SAWS has started trading in metal for plastic. The plastic is durable enough for the streets but doesn't have any scrap value.

Hayden says SAWS has about 50 plastic covers coming in next week and more or coming in a little later. All of the exposed holes belonging to SAWS are expected to be covered in the next couple of weeks.

If you see an exposed meter box, SAWS wants to hear from you. You can call (210) 704-SAWS.
