ELMENDORF, Texas - Elmendorf Police Chief Michael Pimentel was killed Saturday during a traffic stop in Elmendorf.

Bexar County Sheriff Susan Parmerleau confirmed Pimentel was fatally shot after pulling over Joshua Lopez, 24, for a graffiti warrant. Lopez is a resident of Elmendorf.

The sheriff did not given further details, but earlier reports from witnesses state that the officer was shot in the abdomen and shoulder. He was transported by AirLife to University Hospital.

Sgt. Jason Burchett said he rushed to the scene after learning his chief was shot.

“I tried talking to him when he was in the ambulance for a brief moment, but he wasn't conscious,” Burchett said. “Today is proof it doesn’t matter if you’re a small department, you think nothing can happen. Things certainly do.”

The Elmendorf Police Station only has two paid officers and about ten reserves. Now the heartbroken community is trying to figure out what is next.

"I know he would want us to go on with normal business as usual, but it's going to take some time for everyone to heal,” City Administrator Cody Dailey said.

Pimentel had not been with the department long, but he left a huge impact on those who knew him.

"His laughter, his constant good humor, even when things were at their worst, he always had a smile on his face,” Teena Dailey said.

"He talked to everybody. He was friendly to everybody,” City Councilman Richard Rodriguez said. “When we got him over here, he impressed the heck out of us by talking to us and his knowledge and everything."

The sheriff’s office said Lopez had an active warrant for graffiti. He now faces a charge of capital murder of a police officer.
