SAN ANTONIO - The family of the man accused of shooting two children on San Antonio's Southeast Side on Saturday, today, appealed for him to surrender.

Joe Mercado, is accused of shooting a boy, 6, and a girl, 11, during a domestic dispute with the girl's mother.

Today, Mercado's mother made an emotional plea for him to surrender.

"Turn yourself in! Please just turn yourself in. That's the best thing you can do," said Carmen Delgado, Mercado's mother.

Police on Sunday night found the getaway car.

Mercado was charged with attempted murder back in 1993 in connection with the shooting of a woman. Those charges were later dropped. He was also sentenced to 30 years for armed burglary and delivery of cocaine in the early 1990's. Family members say he was re-arrested in February for drug possession.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says it is only days, he believes, before his officers arrest Mercado.
