The San Antonio Library Board is considering putting filters on all city library computers to keep porn and other obscene material out.

It's a convenience many libraries offer, but did you know the internet at San Antonio's Public Libraries is unrestricted?

"I had no idea it wasn't filtered already?" said Patti Harrah, who supports internet filters.

Right now, there are no filters on internet, but they say their computers are all in public areas and they do have staff monitoring them.

"I like it how it is, I just think children should be monitored," said Steven Weber, who is against filters.

It's children the library board is worried about.

The board is now considering adding internet filters.

It's an idea they revisit every year and an issue that has strong arguments on both sides.

"In the past there have been a lot of difficulties, figuring out how do people get information about complicated topics maybe like breast cancer," said Dale McNeill, who works for the San Antonio Public Library.

"I don't believe they should have filters... it's pretty much our constitutional right," said David Gonzales, who is against filters.

Councilman Ron Nirenberg says there's a way to have a filtering program and protect rights.

"An adult can go into the library and if they do want to access certain materials that are filtered and request the filter be removed," said Nirenberg.

He says putting filters in place would put San Antonio in compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act.

Then he says the city would be eligible for more grant funding to support free internet.

"Pornography or anything like that, anything inappropriate like that should stay in the bedroom, it shouldn't be allowed at a public institution like this," said Harrah.

This woman applying for food stamps and looking for jobs says there's no time for that here.

Right now, the idea of library internet filters is still being discussed.

The library's board will make the final decision.San Antonio Public Library Considers Filter For Porn
