healthy produce is one thing, but actually enjoying it is another.
That's why the unlikely pairing of a children's hospital and a grocery
store, is ready to give free fruits and veggies to expectant mothers,
and teach them how to cook it.
"We feel like every family deserves
to feed their children, right? Like the stuff that grows on trees and
on the ground," said Dr. Julie La Barba is in charge of the new
Prescriptions for Produce program. She says the produce aisle's
biggest competition is, cheap, easy to make, unhealthy processed foods,
"If we pay attention to the things that we put in our body, we can
actually use food as medicine."
One of the things that you'll
learn in the program is the relationship between tomatoes and avocados
and how the natural fats in avocados actually help bring out the natural
nutrients within tomatoes that help fight cancer.
don't need to have gourmet cooking skills to get a meal on the table
that both fills you up, tastes good, that happens to be good for you, Dr
La Barba said.
An expectant mom's health will be tracked through
their ob-gyn, as the program looks to eliminate the filling, but
fattening foods so many have gotten used to.
The program aims to put "a home cooked meal on the table, verses swing through the drive thru.."
is just the beginning, as they hope to break the unhealthy habit,
through this free offering, and expand the program nationwide.
