Cruz, Abbott: Unaccompanied children is 'humanitarian nightmare'Updated: Monday, June 23 2014, 01:29 PM CDT SAN ANTONIO - Senator Ted Cruz and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott say the ongoing "humanitarian nightmare" involving tens of thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children is a direct result of President Barack Obama's border policies.Abbott and Cruz arrived at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland to tour the facilities Monday morning.Immediately following the tour, they addressed members of the media, calling the situation a "man-made crisis."Senator Cruz also said there is a belief amongst the young children that they'll be granted amnesty.Cruz, Abbott and Governor Rick Perry have all claimed the federal government should do more to stop the surge of young immigrant children at the border, including funneling more money toward border protection efforts.Governor Perry is scheduled to tour a similar facility in the Rio Grande Valley later Monday afternoon.Meanwhile, the Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson issued an open letter to the parents of the unaccompanied children, pleading with them to not send their children across the border."Sending your child to travel illegally into the United States is not the solution," stated Johnson. "The long journey is not only dangerous; there are not 'permisos,' 'permits,' or free passes at the end."Cruz, Abbott: Unaccompanied children is 'humanitarian nightmare'
